Late fines, no matter how small, are a very real and significant burden for individuals and families. These kinds of burdens can discourage community members from using the library. Library experts have found that charging overdue fines discourages the community from using the library materials and services. Rather than motivating borrowers to return items on time, fines act as an inequitable barrier to service, disproportionately impacting minors, students and community members with limited financial resources. We want to feel welcome in our library! Even if you returned your library materials late:-) Life happens and we totally understand.
